Staff at the Treaty Relations Commission of Manitoba (TRCM) join the Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs and our many partners and associates in congratulating Treaty Commissioner Loretta Ross on her re-appointment as Treaty Relations Commissioner for Manitoba. Treaty Commissioner Ross’s next five-year term is from May 29, 2023 to May 29, 2028.
Treaty Commissioner Loretta Ross was first appointed as the Treaty Commissioner for the Treaty Relations Commission of Manitoba in 2017. As a trained lawyer and someone who works closely with the Elders Council, she offers a unique approach to the TRCM. In her role as Treaty Commissioner, she strives to share the message to all Canadians that the treaties are living agreements that are just as relevant today as they were 150 years ago. As an advocate for the treaties, she firmly believes that treaty education must be based on the true spirit and intent of the treaties and not just the written texts of these agreements. Her hope for the future is that someday every Canadian will have a balanced understanding of the treaties and that this shift in thinking will transform the relationship between First Nations and the Crown.
Treaty Commissioner Ross fully embraces her re-appointment and her role in advocacy and education – something she learned from an early age from her grandfather, George Barker, who served for 44 years as Chief of Hollow Water.
The TRCM staff look forward to her continued leadership, efforts, and inspiration.
