Honouring Our Treaty Relationships & Visions of the Future

Treaty Commissioner Loretta Ross is joined by Grandmother Katherine Whitecloud (Dakota), Grandmother Sherry Copenace (Anishinaabe, Treaty No. 3) and Dr. Elder Harry Bone (Anishinaabe, Treaty No. 2). The Knowledge Keepers reflect on the foundation of Treaties, and the importance of maintaining a relationship with the Creator, the land, language, and teachings.

Dr. Elder Harry Bone, Keeseekoowenin Ojibway First Nation, Treaty No. 2

Reflecting on teachings shared by his grandmother and other Knowledge Keeper, Dr. Elder Harry Bone shares his message about language, identity, nationhood, and the pipe ceremony. He shares a story of a vision his grandmother once had and recalls the first time he witnessed a pipe ceremony as a boy and the profound impact it had on him. His message emphasizes the importance of understanding the sacred teachings of the pipe ceremony, and how they represent Anishinaabe nationhood, sovereignty, and law.

Grandmother Katherine Whitecloud, Wipazoka Wakpa (Sioux Valley) Dakota Nation

Grandmother Katherine Whitecloud shares her knowledge of Treaty from a Dakota perspective. She describes the vast ancestral lands of her people and discusses the relationships the Dakota have with the Blackfeet, Anishinaabe, and Cree. She explains that Treaties are a way of establishing a relationship, to help each other, and honouring that relationship.

Grandmother Sherry Copenace, Ojibways of Onigaming First Nation, Treaty No. 3

Grandmother Sherry Copenace talks about the first Treaties going back to the Anishinaabe Creation Story. She also explains how the Anishinaabe and the Dakota made a Drum Treaty and how that agreement brought peace and made the two nations relations forever. She also shares her own family history regarding Treaty No. 3 and the responsibility she has to ensure that the younger generations learn about the spiritual significance of Treaties.
